Chronic lateral ankle pain is ongoing or frequently recurring discomfort along the outside of the ankle, and it often starts after an injury like a sprain that never fully heals or is repeatedly re-injured. Because several different problems can cause similar symptoms, let the skilled medical and surgical specialists at Neville Foot & Ankle Centers help by pinpointing the underlying source with a focused exam, gait assessment, and imaging when needed, then building a treatment plan to restore stability and prevent future injury.

Aside From Ankle Pain, What Else Might You Notice?

Discomfort isn’t the only clue that something’s wrong—changes in how the foot or ankle looks, feels, or functions can signal a problem that deserves attention.

  • Ankle instability
  • Difficulty walking on uneven ground or in high heels
  • Pain, sometimes intense, on the outer side of the ankle
  • Repeated ankle sprains
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

What Other Ankle Problems Cause These Symptoms?

Even when certain obvious symptoms subside, instability or subtle damage can persist—such as stretched ligaments, tendon irritation, cartilage injury, or scar tissue—leaving the ankle feeling sore, weak, or prone to “rolling” again. So while ankle sprains are the most common cause of chronic lateral ankle pain, other reasons may include:

  • A fracture in one of the bones that make up the ankle joint
  • Arthritis of the joint
  • Inflammation of the joint lining
  • Injury to the nerves that pass through the ankle. In this case, the nerves become stretched, torn, injured by a direct blow, or pinched under pressure
  • Scar tissue in the ankle after a sprain. The scar tissue takes up space in the joint, putting pressure on the ligaments
  • Torn or inflamed tendon
