A neuroma is a painful condition, also referred to as a “pinched nerve” or a nerve tumor. It is a benign growth of nerve tissue frequently found between the third and fourth toes. When you have a neuroma, you may feel a burning sensation, tingling, or numbness between the toes and in the ball of the foot.

While a neuroma is similar to a tumor, it isn’t cancerous. This condition occurs when the tissue surrounding the affected nerve grows thicker, causing painful pressure. In the foot, this condition is medically known as Morton’s neuroma.

The main symptom associated with a neuroma is pain between the toes while walking. Those suffering from the condition often find relief by stopping their walk, taking off their shoe, and rubbing the affected area. At times, the patient will describe the pain as similar to having a stone in their shoe. The majority of people who develop neuromas are women.

Neuromas can slowly worsen over time, making every step feel uncomfortable. Whether your pain flares up during long days on your feet or hits suddenly in certain shoes, it can quickly interfere with your routine and quality of life.

At Neville Foot & Ankle Centers, we understand how disruptive nerve pain can be—especially in your feet. Our podiatrists take the time to listen carefully to your symptoms and examine your feet thoroughly. With nearly four decades of experience, we focus on easing your discomfort while addressing the underlying cause of the nerve irritation.

With locations throughout The Woodlands, Magnolia, Spring, and Conroe, plus same-day appointments and complete in-house care, we help make neuroma treatment accessible and stress-free.

Diagnosing and Treating Neuromas

At Neville Foot & Ankle Centers, diagnosing a neuroma starts with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, lifestyle, and footwear habits. Our podiatrist performs a comprehensive foot exam to pinpoint areas of tenderness, nerve sensitivity, and structural imbalances that may be contributing to your pain. When necessary, we use advanced imaging such as X-rays or diagnostic ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of foot pain.

Once your neuroma is identified, we develop a personalized treatment plan focused on relieving pressure on the nerve and calming inflammation. Many patients experience significant relief with conservative care, including shoe modifications, custom orthotics, padding, activity adjustments, and targeted injections. These treatments are designed to reduce nerve irritation while allowing you to stay active.

For neuromas that don’t respond to conservative care, we also offer minimally invasive and surgical options performed by our experienced foot and ankle doctors. Our goals are always the same: reduce pain, restore comfort, and help you walk comfortably again.
