Pain along the bottom of the foot—anywhere between the heel and the ball of the foot—is commonly described as “arch pain.” While plantar fasciitis is a frequent cause, several other conditions can also irritate the arch and may require professional treatment, especially if symptoms don’t improve quickly.

  • Plantar fasciitis. Strain or inflammation of the plantar fascia (the strong band of tissue on the bottom of the foot), often worst with the first steps in the morning or after rest.
  • Heel spur irritation. A bony growth near the heel that may accompany plantar fasciitis, though the spur itself isn’t always the true source of pain.
  • Overpronation or flatfoot-related strain. Excess rolling inward of the foot can overload the arch tissues and cause aching during or after activity.
  • High arches (cavus foot) and tight foot mechanics. A rigid, high-arched foot can concentrate pressure through the arch and lead to soreness or stress over time.
  • Stress fracture. Small cracks in bones of the foot (often from overuse) that can cause increasing pain with activity and tenderness to touch.
  • Inflammatory arthritis or systemic conditions. Ongoing arch pain with stiffness, warmth, or swelling—especially in multiple joints—may be related to an inflammatory process.
  • Footwear and load-related factors. Unsupportive shoes, sudden increases in activity, weight gain, prolonged standing, or an acute twist/impact can trigger or worsen arch pain.

If arch pain lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, or is severe enough to change how you walk, it’s a good idea to see a podiatrist for evaluation and treatment to prevent it from worsening.
