KeryFlex is a painless, in-office application podiatry product that restores the appearance of your natural nails. This system allows for a certified foot care provider or medical pedicurist to remodel damaged nails affected by fungus, defects, or trauma. The composite resin creates a flexible, but durable, non-porous nail that allows the remaining natural nail to grow. The KeryFlex nail is an immediate cosmetic improvement, providing a natural-looking nail.

We're happy to offer this service at Neville Foot & Ankle Centers throughout Greater Houston. Here are some answers to common questions about KeryFlex. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact one of our offices.

How does KeryFlex differ from acrylic nails?

Acrylic nails are rigid and don't bend with the natural movement of the toes. As a result, acrylic nails applied to the toenails can cause damage to the layer of tissue under the nail or nail bed. Acrylic nails are also applied using strong acids, which irritate the nail bed and can further damage the existing nail.

KeryFlex is flexible, yet durable, and designed specifically for the toes. It’s free of harsh acids used in salon systems. The product is non-porous and won't allow moisture to permeate and get between the natural and prosthetic nails, and its medical-grade resin is impregnated with the hydroxypyridone antifungal ingredient Piroctone.

Can KeryFlex be used on someone without a toenail?

The product doesn't bind to skin. Therefore, the presence of at least 15% of the natural nail is recommended. This often requires an office visit to determine if you're qualified for the product.

Is KeryFlex a cure for fungal nails?

No. It's an aesthetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of toenails damaged by fungus and other nail disorders. Neville Foot & Ankle Centers can use other products to treat toes that test positive for onychomycosis while KeryFlex is applied. For example, we may recommend applying a topical antifungal around the cuticle area but not the nail surface. Application of any liquid products under the proximal tip should be avoided.

How long does it take to apply the product?

On average, a member of our team can complete the application of KeryFlex Bonding Agent, KeryFlex Resin, and KeryFlex Sealant, including UV light curing time, in 15–30 minutes, depending on the number of nails that need to be reconstructed.

How soon must I return for another application?

The interval between applications varies according to your needs, but generally, it's 6 to 8 weeks. Rarely, a KeryFlex nail may detach from the natural nail. This can occur with repeated trauma to it—for example, when a long-distance runner has a small natural nail segment or the nail edge has extended beyond the tip of the toe.

How is a KeryFlex nail removed?

This application permanently bonds to the natural nail. To remove it, our foot care providers file the artificial nail utilizing an electric drill until it's no longer attached to the natural nail.

Can I trim a KeryFlex nail myself?

A KeryFlex nail should be filed with a nail file or emery board to maintain a normal length. It should not be cut or clipped.

Can nail polish be applied over KeryFlex?

The medical-grade resin is unaffected by acetone, nail polishes, or detergents. So you can apply nail polish immediately after the KeryFlex sealant is cured and the remaining dispersion film is removed with alcohol.

Can a KeryFlex nail lift or pop off?

Sometimes. It usually happens when a very small natural nail segment is present. It might occur within the first 3 days after application.

Will wearing open-toe shoes lighten or weaken a KeryFlex nail?

No. KeryFlex was formulated with ingredients to protect against potential sun damage and yellowing.

Are there specific shoes I should avoid wearing after KeryFlex is applied?

Friction caused by footwear might chip or crack a KeryFlex and reduce its overall integrity. Comfortable and properly fit shoes with a wide toe box are recommended.

Can KeryFlex be used in combination with laser therapy?

Yes. A KeryFlex nail may be applied immediately after laser therapy and between treatments. However, our Greater Houston podiatrists don't recommend laser treatment through a KeryFlex nail. If you're receiving both services, we'll talk with you in more detail how to proceed.

Who shouldn't use KeryFlex?

KeryFlex Nail Restoration shouldn't be used on individuals with:

  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Arterial insufficiency
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Suspicious pigmented lesions on the nail
  • Ingrown toenails

We also don't recommend it to patients who are pregnant, nursing, or known to be sensitive or allergic to any of its ingredients.

Are there any other precautions?

We advise patients to refrain from using any products on their natural nails for two days prior to a procedure.
