It’s a painless, in-office cosmetic treatment that uses a medical-grade, non-porous resin to create a flexible, natural-looking artificial nail. It may be appropriate for people with mild to moderate changes, such as:

  • Brittle and splitting nails
  • Discolored nails
  • Horizontal ridges
  • Nail fungus
  • Nail shape changes due to injury
  • Spoon-shaped nails

Unlike a store-bought kit, KeryFlex is only available in select podiatry offices, so it’s applied by someone trained in foot health. Our board-certified care providers and medical pedicurists shape the resin over the affected toenails, then harden it under an ultraviolet light. The application is customized to match the surrounding nails, giving you a discreet option for improving appearance between visits.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

Applying KeryFlex is painless and usually takes about 15–30 minutes, depending on how many nails need work. We apply a bonding agent, the resin, and a sealant, then cure each layer under ultraviolet light. You can return to normal activity the same day, and you can even paint over the nail with standard polish once the sealant is cured.

To get the best bond, we ask patients to skip oils and other products on the natural nail for 2–3 days beforehand.

How Does KeryFlex Differ From Acrylic Nails?

Rather than simply covering the natural nail for cosmetic purposes, this approach creates a more natural-looking nail while allowing our provider to evaluate the condition of your toes and provide dedicated treatment. 

  • It flexes instead of staying rigid. Acrylic nails don’t bend with the natural movement of your toes, which can damage the nail bed underneath. KeryFlex moves with the toe.
  • It doesn't contain harsh acids. Salon acrylics are applied with strong chemicals that often irritate and further damage the nail bed. KeryFlex is free of those acids.
  • It resists moisture and fungus. The resin is non-porous, so moisture can’t seep between the natural and artificial nail, and it contains an antifungal ingredient called Piroctone.

Is KeryFlex a Cure for Toenail Fungus?

No. This application improves the appearance of a nail, but it doesn’t cure the underlying infection. The good news is that it can be applied along with your treatment. If a nail tests positive for a fungal infection, we may recommend a topical antifungal around the cuticle rather than on the nail surface, so you can address the symptoms of toenail fungus while your nails still look their best. 

Keep in mind, fungal nails grow slowly, so visible improvement from treatment can take several months. KeryFlex can provide a cosmetic solution during that process, but you’ll still need to follow your prescribed treatment plan and return for recommended follow-up visits. How Long Does KeryFlex Last?

For most of our patients, a KeryFlex nail lasts 6–8 weeks. If you have a smaller natural nail segment, touch-ups may be required every 3–4 weeks. We encourage you to make the most of the treatment by avoiding:

  • Tight or narrow footwear. Shoes that press on the nail create repeated stress on the bond. A wider toe box is better.
  • Long soaks. Extended time in baths, hot tubs, or pools weakens the bond over time.
  • Picking or prying. Peeling the nail off at home might damage your nail bed. A KeryFlex nail should only be removed by our skilled providers using an electric file. 
  • At-home UV gel products. While you can paint your KeryFlex nail like any other, light-cured gel polishes and topcoats can compromise the restoration.

To keep it in good shape, file the free edge with an emery board rather than cutting or clipping it, and book a touch-up around the 6-week mark instead of waiting for the nail to lift.

Who Should Avoid KeryFlex Nail Restoration Treatment?

This application is suitable for many people, but a careful evaluation is necessary before treatment. During the consultation, our Greater Houston podiatrists: 

  • Ask about allergies, pregnancy, medications, and other relevant medical conditions. 
  • Examine the nail and surrounding skin.
  • Review circulation and sensation in your feet.
  • Consider the cause of the nail changes.

This comprehensive assessment helps determine whether KeryFlex can be applied safely or whether another concern should be treated first. We might not recommend it to patients with:

  • Peripheral vascular disease.
  • Arterial insufficiency.
  • Peripheral nerve damage or reduced sensation.
  • Suspicious dark or pigmented areas beneath the nail.
  • An active ingrown toenail.
  • An allergy or sensitivity to the product’s ingredients.

Additionally, if you have significant nail separation, open sores, active infection, or less than 15% healthy nail available for attachment, you might need a different approach.
